How do I know which Mac OS-X version I have?

What Mac OS-X version do I have? 10.8, 10.7, 10.6 or any older?


Mac OS X is a series of Unix-based graphical interface operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Apple Inc. OS X is designed to run exclusively on Macintosh computers, having been pre-loaded on all Macs since 2002. 

Generally there are several Mac OS-X versions released by Apple. Each version is described by its name and number. Below is the list of supported Mac OS-X version:

  • 10.4: "Tiger"
  • 10.5: "Leopard"
  • 10.6: "Snow Leopard"
  • 10.7: "Lion"
  • 10.8: "Mountain Lion"

 

To determine which Mac OS-X version you have please follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Apple menu item in the upper left corner
  2. Select About this Mac (first item)



  3. The version number is clearly displayed on the dialog that appears.
